Little Things

Excerpt from Merrill's book 'Upstream Downstream'.

About Small Watercolors:

To fully appreciate them is to understand that I invest as much thought and concentration into a small work on paper as I do a full size canvas. As the work scales down, so do the brushes. You can count 'em. There are as many marks in a small painting as in a large one. In most parts of the painting I build four to five layers to reach the finish. I am trying to keep the whole color surface alive and vibrant. That's the hard part of a watercolor. Follow the edges of shapes to see the rhythms of the painting.
